Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a will and a power of attorney?+

A power of attorney takes effect while you are alive but unable to act; it names someone to handle finances or medical decisions. A will takes effect only after you die and directs what happens to your belongings.

Do I need a lawyer for these documents?+

Healthcare powers of attorney and advance directives often do not require a lawyer in Arizona. For financial powers of attorney and wills — especially with property, business interests, or blended families — an elder law attorney is strongly recommended.

How often should I update these documents?+

Review every three to five years and after any major life event: marriage, divorce, a death in the family, a serious diagnosis, or a move to another state.
